Abstract

Death remains one of the most unsolved mysteries that has occupied the minds of humans throughout history and it can be said that it has been one of the main concerns of thinkers and teachings of all divine religions. Various groups like philosophers, mystics, and poets, adopt distinct perspectives on death and have articulated diverse viewpoints regarding its nature. Bīdel Dehlavi is recognized as a prominent mystic poet from the 11th and 12th centuries, known for his unique and recurring perspective on this subject. In all of his works, the theme of death is imbued with a unique significance through the use of vivid imagery. He perceives death as an integral part of the evolutionary cycle, viewing it as one of the most crucial phases of development. Through a descriptive and analytical method, the present study aims to provide answer to the essential question of how Bīdel approaches the concept of death. It explores the interpretations and artistic techniques used by him to elucidate death nature and significance, as well as to persuade his audience. The findings of the study indicate that Bīdel Dehlavi, recognized as an existential poet, exhibits not only a lack of fear regarding death but also a sense of admiration for it, approaching the concept with a romantic perspective. In this regard, various interpretations are employed to elucidate and demonstrate the appeal of death, such as being free from prison, attaining a state of salvation, ascending a ladder, transcending limitations, finding solace, eliminating pests, deciphering a mystery, experiencing a gentle breeze, merging drops, bubbles, and waves into the sea, experiencing intoxication and drunkenness, polishing mirror, piercing gaze (Totiyay-e chashm (توتیای چشم, engaging in dance, and purifying the self from sins among others.
